This Clear Bottom Kayak Tour Takes You To An Underground Waterfall

When most people think of underground adventures in Kentucky, they tend to consider the famous Louisville Mega Cavern. While that attraction is indeed a world class adventure in its own right, there is another underground tour you  definitely need to add to your bucket list! Founded in 2016 SUP Kentucky has numerous incredible float tours you can choose from. Sup Kentucky is located at 2478 Glen Cairn Rd. in Rogers, Kentucky. For more information, click here.

One of these amazing tours is the Crystal Kayak and Sup Glow Tour! This one of a kind tour takes place in a flooded abandoned limestone mine. The tour lasts 90 minutes with 1 hour spent paddling.  For a more intimate experience tours are limited to 8 guests, and to make things interesting. You can take your pick between glass bottomed kayak or a stand-up paddleboard. Both vessels are outfitted with multicolored LED lights which illuminate the water underneath.

The abandoned mine has around five miles of tunnels. And it’s all flooded from an underground aquifer. The mine’s tunnels are 60 feet in width and about 30 feet in height. Because there is no wind or waves inside, the waters are always calm, and previous paddleboarding experience is not required.

Several things really make this kayak trip special. For one; the limestone walls of the mine work as a natural filtration system and keep the water crystal clear! With the LED lights illuminating the water guests can spot rainbow trout swimming beneath. There are also spots you can catch the occasional bat sleeping on the ceilings high above. The walls of the mine feature numerous fossils.

main attraction of the epic float trip, with no doubt is the stunning underground waterfall. The waterfall is spring fed and is about 30 in height! Temps within the mine hover in the 50’s all year long, but the water temperature is always a cool 42 degrees. These steady temps, make the tour a popular one all year long.  In the hot Kentucky summers this is a perfect place to escape the summer heat. During the winter, the 50 degree temps are a welcomed relief from the cold winter weather.

Get ready for some fun on this unique Red River Gorge underground cavern glow adventure. This is one of Kentucky’s most popular adventures, with tours limited to groups of 8, I highly suggest making reservations well in advance. Some dates will sell out fast.

Tickets cost $75 for adults ages 13 and older for tours between Sunday and Friday and $80 for Saturday tours. The earliest tour starts at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and at 10 a.m. on weekdays. You can book your tour by clicking here. Pictures used in this article are from the SUP Kentucky Facebook page.
