The 15,990-acre Hickory Run State Park, in Carbon County, lies in the western foothills of the Pocono Mountains, in Pennsylvania. The park has: more than 40 miles of hiking trails. Three state park natural areas, and miles of pristine trout streams. Hickory Run State Park is located at 3613 PA-534, in White Haven, Pennsylvania.

Midwest Hiking

The hiking at Hickory Run is incredible! Many of the trails were old roads from the towns of Hickory Run and Saylorsville that flourished in the area between 1830 and 1900. Most of the other park trails were created by the Civilian Conservation Corps under the guidance of the National Park Service between 1936 and 1945. The trails lead through areas rich in historic and scenic interest. This is especially true from mid-June until mid-July when the mountain laurel and rhododendron are in bloom and again in mid-October at the height of the fall foliage.

Midwest Hiking

Our favorite trail in the park is the Hawk Falls Trail. This is a .6 mile loop trail hike and is considered a difficult hike. However the reward of the beautiful waterfall is well worth the effort. This trail wanders through a tunnel of rhododendron and ends with a view of Hawk Falls, a natural, 25-foot waterfall. Swimming is prohibited at Hawk Falls.

Midwest Hiking

Another popular trial is the Lake Trail. This short but very scenic trail runs around the back of Hickory Run Lake and connects to Stage Trail. While these are our two favorites, there are numerous trails within the park to choose from. For more information on the parks trails, click here.

Midwest Hiking

The park also has a great campground, The large tent and trailer camping area has modern restrooms with warm showers, a sanitary dump station, a forested section and a grassy, more open section. Many sites have electric hookups. The campground has modern facilities from the second Friday in April until the third Sunday in October when the dump station and all facilities with running water close for the season. Rustic camping continues until mid-December. There are also a variety of rustic cottages within the park that are available for rent. For more information, on camping within the park, click here.

Midwest Hiking

Swimming is permitted only at the designated swimming area of Sand Spring Lake, which also features a sand beach. The beach is open for swimming from late May to mid-September, 8:00 A.M. to sunset.

Midwest Hiking

Anglers find excellent sport in many of the streams and lakes within the park boundaries. Some streams are stocked with brook and brown trout.

This Incredible Natural Spring In Michigan Is One Of The Most Beautiful In Existence

Palms Book State Park is a hidden gem of a park located in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The area is a popular destination for adventure travelers and nature enthusiasts. Palms Book is an often overlooked attraction in the area. With several other more well known sights garnering most of the tourist traffic. The park is located at M-149 (a mile north of the Co Rd 455 junction) in Manistique Michigan. For more information, click here.

Palms Book is located 7 miles from Indian Lake State Park, and just a short drive from the famous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The Upper Peninsula is also home to an impressive array of the Midwest’s most impressive waterfalls!

Palms Book has one thing those iconic locations don’t. Palms Book State Park is home to one of the most impressive fresh-water natural springs in the world. This is easily one of Michigan’s most alluring natural attractions, and its gorgeous!

Kitch-iti-kipi Spring is Michigan’s largest freshwater spring, spanning 200 feet across and 40 feet deep. The flow continues throughout the year at a constant 45 degrees Fahrenheit, gushing more than 10,000 gallons of water a minute from fissures in the underlying limestone.

The most popular attraction within the park is the self-guided observation raft, visitors are guided to vantage points overlooking fascinating underwater features and fantasies. Ancient tree trunks, lime-encrusted branches and fat trout can be seen as they slip through crystal waters far below. Clouds of sand kept in constant motion by gushing waters create ever-changing shapes and forms – a challenge to the imagination. The self-guided observation raft and the trail leading to it are ADA-accessible.

Palms Book State Park is located at M-149 (a mile north of the Co Rd 455 junction) in Manistique Michigan. Signage in the area can be a bit confusing, on your way to the park, you may see signs referring to The Big Spring, or Palms Book, or Kitch-iti-kipi. All of these are the same place, the name is used interchangeably in the area.

If your in the area chasing waterfalls, or visiting the beautiful Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, do yourself a favor and make the short drive over to Palms Book State Park and check out the incredible Kitch-iti-kipi Spring. You won’t regret it.
