Chimney Rock Campground is located right along the Chimney Rocks portion of the scenic Upper Iowa River, and is one of the most beautiful campgrounds in Iowa, and possibly the entire Midwest. Chimney Rock Campground, rents canoes, kayaks, and tubes for all your floating needs. Imagine paddling down river past 200 foot tall bluffs in a gorgeous spring fed river.

A hunting and fishing paradise. The campground is surrounded with both public and private hunting grounds, the area is a great place for deer, turkey and pheasant hunting. Located just a short distance from a cold water trout stream. The area has also been described as a “hot-spot” for both bass and trout fishing.

Chimney Rock, is the perfect location for family fun. The campground has shower facilities, a sand volleyball court, a swimming area, kayak and canoe rentals, a picnic pavilion, a playground, and a newly expanded Rec room with video games and a pool table. I first heard of the Upper Iowa River from an article in National Geographic Magazine. This article listed paddling the Upper Iowa River as one of the top 100 adventures in North America. Right away, I knew this was an adventure I had to experience. There are two great outfitters in the area, both offer full shuttle service as well as rentals. I have used both and I highly recommend them. Chimney Rock Campground, and Bluffton Resort Campground.

The Upper Iowa River is perhaps the most widely-recognized river in Iowa and one of the first in the nation to be nominated as a national Wild and Scenic River in the 1960s. The river originates in LeRoy, Minnesota before meandering 136 miles to the Mississippi River near New Albin, Iowa. The river and corridor change along its length, going from a narrow and winding savanna river to a wider and more dynamic river flanked by dramatic vertical limestone palisades and forested bluffs.

Thanks to 35 inches of rain per year, and hilly terrain, numerous waterfalls dot the landscape of the Upper Iowa River Watershed. Three waterfalls are located within walking distance of the river, and the largest spring in Minnesota, Odessa Spring, flows directly into the Upper Iowa River. Odessa and Malanaphy Springs are accessible from the river. Dunnings Spring, Twin Springs, and the second largest spring in Iowa, Siewers Spring are all nearby.

The stretch of river from Granger Minnesota to Decorah Iowa is about 45 miles long, and offers some of the best scenery the Midwest has to offer!

I usually camp at Chimney Rock Campground near Cresco, and launch into the river, 50 feet from my site. This is one of the most beautiful campgrounds I have visited. It’s right along the river, with towering bluffs just East of the property. The campground has RV sites, cabins, and primitive sites as well.

From Chimney Rock Campground, I kayak down to Dunnings Spring, just West of the Ice Cave in Decorah. This entire trip takes about 5 hours. There are numerous other spots you can put in or get out at along the way. But this one is my favorite.

Chimney Rock Campground and Randy’s Bluffton Campground both offer kayak rentals, and full shuttle service. I have used both in the past and feel comfortable recommending either one. Just communicate how long you plan to be on the river with the campgrounds and they will give you an exit point that meets your time frame.

This is one kayak trip you need to add to your bucket list, its really that good!

Each guided tour is nearly an hour and includes a walk through the amazing signature Healing-All Cathedral room, the onyx room, a back passageway to a natural waterfall, and a top rated underground laser light and water show. This Caverns is one of the largest accumulations of gem stone quality onyx in North America, and has beautiful formations, so guests are encouraged to take photos during the adventure in this subterranean wonderland.

There are over twenty attractions on the land above the cave, making Majestic Caverns the perfect visit for those seeking adventure, the great outdoors, and fun with family or friends.

On nice days, take your plate out to the dining table on the covered deck for a meal with a side of mountain breezes.

The highlight of this stunning vacation home is the private indoor pool-set at a perfect 87 degrees! This gorgeous pool is a real stunner. The large pool room features beautiful wood ceilings, log pillars, and a cool stone floor. Along one wall, a stacked stone waterfall serves as a feature and fun place to hang out. You’ll find another waterfall on the other side of the pool, and in the center is a little yard! With such a great indoor space, you can swim year-round, no matter the weather. And with a table and  big screen TV, you can bring a board game or some cards and play while others splash around.

Each of the bedrooms in Eagle River Lodge is a retreat within this spacious retreat. Six comfortable bedrooms give you space for 24 guests, with king-size beds in 5 bedrooms and 2 full-size bunk beds in the other bedroom. All the bedrooms have their own TVs, and with 7 ½ bathrooms, there will be plenty of space for everyone to get ready before heading into town or calling it a night.

You can’t take a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains without spending at least a little time in the great outdoors.
