Established in 1986, Harbour Village Campground and Water Park is located on 300 acres in beautiful Door County.  The area has pristine wilderness, like you’ve never seen before. Chewacla State Park’s 696 scenic acres offer plenty of rest, relaxation and recreation, just a short drive from the Auburn-Opelika area. Facilities include a 26-acre lake, swimming area, playground, a modern campground, picnic areas with tables, grills and shelters, cabins, hiking and mountain biking trails. Lake Chewacla is perfect for reeling in bream, bass, crappie and catfish or taking a dip off the beach area. No luck in the lake, then try one of the park’s two creeks. There is no boat ramp on the lake, but visitors are allowed to bring their own small non-motorized watercraft such as canoes or kayaks if they can be hand-launched from the bank.

The park offers plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails to choose from. Options range from the short interpretive Sweet Shrub Trail to the more challenging mountain biking trails built by the Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers (CAMP). While on the trails visitors are likely to see squirrels, chipmunks, red fox, deer and turkeys; as well as unique rock formations and a variety of native flora and fauna.

There are six stone cottages in the park, which are available for rental year round. The cottages have been renovated and feature hardwood floors, stone fireplaces, beautiful new bathrooms, modern kitchens and televisions. Each has central heating and cooling so your stay will be comfortable no matter what time of year you visit. Linens are provided. If you prefer roughing it the park also offers 36 full hookup camping sites and 10 primitive sites. Shower facilities are available in all camping areas.

There are at least 12 named trails, that are perfect for hiking and mountain biking. Trails vary in difficulty and length, and each one offers different unique views of the park. For a detailed description of the trails, you can view the complete list here.

Canoe rentals are available Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 6:30pm (closing times change during the year based on park hours of operations). Guests can rent canoes by going to the beach access area and talking to a representative. Rentals can be made as late as 30 minutes before the park closes.

DeSoto State Park is nestled atop beautiful Lookout Mountain in scenic Northeast Alabama and accented by many rushing waterfalls and fragrant wildflowers that will simply take your breath away. For the more adventurous, there are also Primitive Camping sites for tents as well as two back country campsites with shelters. No matter what type of lodging you might prefer or have need of, they have it!

There is a plethora of outdoor activities you can enjoy at DeSoto State Park, including swimming, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, and chasing waterfalls! The park is also just a short drive from Little River Canyon Nature Preserve. There is also zip-lining, geo-caching, and picnic areas throughout the park. Trust me you won’t run out of things to do!

Pack a picnic lunch and head out for a day exploring the ridges, waterfalls, and river in beautiful DeSoto State Park. Located on Lookout Mountain, DeSoto State Park has over 35 miles of hiking trails, including 11 + miles of mountain bike trails in the main area of the park. Most interconnect with each other, while others take you into more remote areas. DeSoto State Park’s trail system boasts interesting rock formations, small seasonal waterfalls, a variety of diverse plant communities, plentiful animal life, and beautiful views of the West Fork of Little River, which flows downstream into interconnecting Little River Canyon.

Beautiful waterfalls, breath-taking overlooks, wooded trails, and peaceful picnic areas – Little River Canyon has something for everyone. The Little River is unique because it flows for most of its length atop Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. The 15,288 acre preserve spans from Fort Payne, Alabama down to Cedar Bluff, Alabama. Little River Canyon is made up of forested uplands, waterfalls, canyon rims and bluffs, pools, boulders, and sandstone cliffs offer settings for a variety of recreational activities. Natural resources and cultural heritage come together to tell the story of the Preserve, a special place in the Southern Appalachians.

Little River Canyon is open year-round from sunrise to sunset! This is a day use only park and camping is prohibited. Make a note that phone service is not available with the canyon and many other parts of the park. Free WIFI is available in the Little River Canyon Center.

Fishing is allowed anywhere along Little River inside the Preserve if you have a valid Alabama or Non-Resident Fishing License. Children under 16 and adults over 65 are exempt from a fishing license.

Little River Canyon National Preserve offers some of the most difficult and sought-after climbing routes in the South. The sandstone cliffs featured in Little River Canyon are accessible from many roadside pullouts along the Little River Canyon Rim Parkway (Highway 176). Bouldering is also very popular at Little River Canyon.
