Considered by many to be one of upper Michigan’s most picturesque waterfalls, Agate Falls Scenic Site is located on the middle branch of the Ontonagon River. The falls are created as the river finds its way over an extended shelf of terraced sandstone. The resulting waterfall is a broad band of interlacing cascades and small falls nearly 40 feet high. Dropping down from the highlands of the western Upper Peninsula, this river drops 875 feet from the Bond Falls Flowage to Lake Superior, and Agate Falls is part of this change in elevation. The water flows over a shelf of erosion-resistant sandstone.
A half-mile trail provides access to an observation platform with views of the top of the falls. The trail passes through a tunnel under M-28 and you can also view overhead railroad trestles. The trail has been improved, but is still rugged.
Parking, water, vault toilets, and picnic tables are available at an adjacent MDOT roadside park (generally open early May through late October).
The park is open year-round, however trails and boardwalks are not monitored or groomed for ice and snow! If you do decide to visit during the off-season, the frozen waterfall is an incredible sight to see.
