The azure waters of Wekiwa Springs have made it Orange County’s longest-running tourist attraction. From the dense, almost tropical hammocks near where the springs feed into the Wekiva River to the scenic sandhill uplands, the park offers ample opportunities to see many kinds of animals.
It is a wonder to consider that Wekiwa Springs, an oasis of nature, is just 16 miles from downtown Orlando, one of Florida’s largest cities, and 30 miles from the big tourist attractions. Swim in crystal-clear Wekiwa Springs where the water is a refreshing 72 degrees year-round. The spring’s natural open setting is perfect for spreading a blanket on the grassy slope, having a picnic and enjoying the day. Since its discovery in the 1860s, Wekiwa Springs (originally called Clay Springs after the property owner) has long been an attraction drawing visitors to the area.
This second-magnitude spring expels 43 million gallons (163 million liters) of water a day. The swimming area at the spring is just over a half-acre in size with an average depth of four feet.
Slopes of gently rolling hills supporting longleaf pine among other specialty plants is the sandhill habitat where the 60 spacious campsites are located. Each wooded site has water and electrical hook-up, a fire ring with grill, and a picnic table. Some sites also have sewer hook-ups, and a dump station is located at the campground.
