It’s with good reason that Ledges State Park is one of Iowa’s most iconic spots it’s full of bridges, trails, waterways and more wildlife than you can imagine. Two of the most popular trails take you to the beautiful view from Inspiration Point – either the Canyon Road trail, or Table Rock Trail. Both trails are less than 2 miles and either offer a loop, or an out-and-back option. The Lost Lake Trail is another popular trail, perfect for a shorter hike.
While the park is mostly known as a great place for hiking, it’s also a fascinating place for history buffs, as the park is riddled with ancient ruins throughout. There is the remains of the Civilian Conservation Corps, there is also an old stone fireplace leftover from the Fowler homestead hidden deep in the forest.
Interestingly the parks creation itself has a rich history as well. Millions of years ago, Iowa was covered by a prehistoric sea. As glaciers tore thru the area, they carved out the unique rock formations you can see today. Leaving the park with 50 foot sandstone walls and giant 100 foot bluffs.
Ledges offers several campsites, including electrical hookups, non-electric hookups, and some hike-in. Modern restrooms, showers, a trailer dump station and a playground are also located in the campground. Advance campsite reservations can be made online through the park reservation system. Half of the campsites are still available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
